Inside the Internship: Day One
Hey y’all. My name’s Jamie and I’m Colby Day’s newest intern. He asked me to do a column about what moving here to New York for an internship’s like. I’ve never written anything before (except for YouTube comments) so I’m pretty excited!
Day One
I haven’t had an internship before, let alone one for a production company in NYC! I’d only ever been here before for the 8th grade field trip, and since I had a broken leg at the time I only really got to see the hotel room. So I was pretty excited when I got here yesterday.
Needless to say, I had no idea what to expect! I do admit, it’s a little different than I thought. For example, I kind of pictured an office, with computers and a receptionist and stuff. But as it turns out, it’s almost kind of like an apartment. Colby says it’s all too keep down overhead costs, which is pretty good business sense really. Why rent a whole office yourself when you can work out of a trendy studio apartment on 138th Street and split the rent with a Ukrainian couple and a 50-year old taxidermist?
I showed up early this morning (because I was so nervous) and had to buzz quite a few times before somebody yelled down “What the fuck do you want?” I’m pretty sure I got there too early. Turns out I woke up the taxidermist.
When I got up to the front door, I got to meet Colby Day himself. I figured I’d be working for someone underneath him, but, once again, low overhead. It was a little uncomfortable to meet him, because he was in his boxers. I had to explain who I was a few times, and what exactly I was doing there before he remembered. When he finally let me inside, my first task was to clean up all the beer cans from his office (there’s a bed in there, too, and some of the cans were in the sheets). While I did this he sat on the couch doing research. Apparently he’s doing some sort of project related to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, because he watched about three hours of reruns of that show.
Well, that’s pretty much all I’ve done so far, it’s only my first day! Oh, I did mess up once today when I called Mr. Day by his first name. He just yelled at me for a few minutes and threw a bowl of cereal on the ground that he made me clean up. It makes sense, we do have to try and keep things professional.
Well, I’ll be sure to keep you posted how things go from here!
