Pope Celebrates Galileo, Immediately Bursts Into Flame
Pope Benedict XVI today celebrated the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of the telescope. Benedict commemorated the work of astronomers, and said that understanding the laws of nature and science can stimulate appreciation of God’s work. Those same astronomers went on afterward to clarify that understanding science and appreciating God’s work are pretty mutually exclusive.
The church apologize in 1992 for condemning Galileo and scientific demonstrations that the sun did not revolve around the Earth. Astronomers are still waiting for an apology from the church for condeming scientific demonstrations that tall, silly hats bring you no closer to god.
