Iraqis Celebrate First Christmas, Buy Loads of Unnecessary Shit

This Saturday marked the first-ever public Christmas celebration in Baghdad. The event was sponsored by the Iraqi Interior Ministry and included a Christmas tree, Santa Claus, and a uniformed military band. The band did not play traditional Christmas music, but instead such regional hits as “All I Want For Christmas is Death to the Infidel” and “Holly Jolly Jihad.”

An Interior Ministry spokesman said he was glad that security had improved and that now Iraqis “have to go back and strengthen community ties.” The easiest way to strengthen community, of course, is to promote Christmas in a country that is 97% Muslim.
