Anachronistic Urban Westerns Can’t Make Money?

2008 December 22

I was very depressed this afternoon when I got the following e-mail. Yes, I was depressed because it was the only e-mail I had received all day, but also because it was sent to inform me that the wildly underexposed, wildly brilliant web series The West Side was going to be put on hiatus due to a lack of funds.

“It’s been six months since we posted Episode Four, and we’re well aware that Episode Five is long overdue. Unfortunately, we’re not posting here to release a new episode, but rather to announce The West Side is on hiatus.”

For those of you who have not seen the series (virtually everyone in the world), watch it. The series represents everything that is great about internet media: it’s unique, well-produced, engaging, and not to mention beautifully shot. The other aspect of web content it represents perfectly: if you’re not crying, farting, or selling Pepsi, nobody will pay you for it.

Want to read the entire blog post about the death of quality programming? Go ahead. Oh, and if for some reason you used to work at one of the countless banks that have gone out of business this year, happened to receive a hefty severance package in government bailout money, and are looking for a new job, I hear they’re looking for an executive producer. As am I.
